Tasseography, in other words known as tasseomancy or tassology is a method of divination or fortune-telling which interprets the pattern of tea leaves, coffee grounds or sediment of the wine by reading it through the symbols and interpretations that have been built. This practice of worship has taken place for thousands of years and is associated with the Chinese who had been maintaining tea and its beneficial qualities for centuries.
The word tasse has been derived from the French word meaning a cup which was actually derived from the Arabic loan-word and then processed into the French word tassa. Whereas, -graphs is derived from Greek words which mean the writing, -logy is a study and -mancy means prediction.
While it is important to know specific questions and specific needs requested by the querent, but revealing the true meaning behind each symbol is also very important because there are some general guidelines for the meaning of each different forms in a cup of tea or a cup of coffee while reading coffee or tea leaves reading.
Tea leaf readings occur when fortune tellers begin to see the patterns and forms left in the querent’s cup after drinking their tea and started interpreting them as prophetic messages, past, present and future. This practice has grown and developed in the seventeenth century when Dutch traders begin introduced tea to Europe as a cheap way to advise people. This is because a cup of tea is needed and it continues to become increasingly popular as a way of telling the future as well as entertainment.
Some practitioners and authors have been produced as a result of reading tea leaves from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. Meanwhile, British pottery has made many teaspoons of complex tea and is specially designed for fate. Culture Middle Eastern that practice divination usually use left-over coffee grounds from Turkish coffee, Lebanese coffee and Greek coffee.
Method of tea leaf reading
First, pour a cup of tea without using a tea filter, drunk or teapot. After that, shake the cup with moderate and separate any remaining liquids in the plate. The diviner will then look at the pattern of tea leaves in the cup and allow the imagination to play with the forms suggested by them. They may look like a letter, a heart shape, or a ring. These forms are then interpreted intuitively or through a rather standard system of symbolism.
It is traditional to read the cup from now on to the future by starting from the cup holder rim and followed by the symbols through the circle, until the base is reached, thus symbolizing the distant future. Most magicians will see images only in dark tea leaves in white or neutral backgrounds and some of them will read the reverse image formed by looking at symbols formed in negative white space, with dark leaf clumps forming background.
Some western fortune tellers do not recommend tasseography by the use of tea from an open air-bag or use a dictionary of symbols. This is because, the tea that forms in the cup will not be formed and the tea leaf readings have their own historic symbolic system which does not fit into other systems such as the symbolic dream of prophecy.
The existence of the symbol has given much interpretation but the predictors usually focus on the color of symbols only. Since most cups are white or ivory and dark grounds, these symbols are formed from strong and contrasting colors. White is considered a “good” symbol that focuses on things that are generally positive for expression, while the “bad” symbol represents the dark grounds for the querent.
Symbols can form many things, including people, animals, and dead objects. Usually, for predictions, the fortune will collect nearby symbols together. For example, aircraft symbols such as airplanes or balloons means an unsuccessful project while an anchor symbol means good luck in business and stability in love but if a cloudy symbol appears, it can be the opposite meaning.
Placement of tasseography symbols in the cup can also change the meaning of a symbol either slightly or completely. Nearby symbols can also change its meaning as it is considered interacting with each other. For example, hands are interpreted in relation to what is close to them, as what they point to or reach.
Also, the overall placement of symbols in a cup can change the meaning. Some readers divide their cups into sections for easy reading, especially when it comes to wishes or concerns of readers. This method can focus on fortune tellers.
Types of fortune teller’s cup
There are three types of fortune teller’s cup that can be recognized. First type is zodiac cups. This cup contains a zodiacal and planetary symbol where the interior of the cup contains the planetary symbols while the plate contains the astrological sign symbols. Unfortunately, for the common pattern there are many exceptions and variations. This placement of symbols is the combination of astrology and tasseography.
The other type of cup is playing card cups. These cups have their own tiny images in the interior of a deck of scattered cards. This scattered cards contains 52 cards plus a joker in a poker deck or 32 cards in a euchre deck. Not only that, some sets of cards that is also printed on the saucers contain a short written card interpretation. The playing card allows the fortune to relate the cartomancy to the tasseography.
The last type of fortune teller’s cup is symbol cups. A dozen and fifty of the most common visual cues can be found in tea leaves that has been decorated in the cups. The purpose is for the easy reference and explanatory booklet that have been supplied. Basically, the symbols are displayed inside the cups but there are also cup sets that were decorated outside and appear in the cups or the saucers.
