In America guns have been a part of the country’s society since its birth. Throughout history the citizens of the US have used firearms to protect the nation, protect their families, to hunt for food and to engage in sporting activities. The issue of Guns and Weighing the rights and liberties of the individual against the welfare and safety of the public has always been a precarious balancing act. In the United States, gun control is one of these tumultuous issues that has Entrenched.
Frightening statistics, point to handguns in particular as being the most dangerous and misused firearm in society. Some statistics indicate that crime linked to handguns is as high as 90%, Stevens, (1997). These statistics cannot be confirmed but has people questioning the Legitimacy of “handgun “ownership in particular.
As stated in the U.S. Constitution, the Second Amendment as part of the Bill of Rights gives individual citizens the right to keep and bear arms. The intention of this amendment is at the core of the gun control debate.
