Discipline in education is to prepare students for valuable living condition within the society to acquire quality education, which contributes to the economic, social and political development of the nation. It is among the basic ingredient that plays crucial roles in school system. According to Schon, D. (1983) suitably states that, every child has a need to attend school. Basically, South Sudan is a country effect by civil war and indiscipline cases occurs every day as the students refuse to obey school rules and regulations of the school due to been traumatized and confused by the environmental factor. According to the oxford advance dictionary” Indiscipline is lack of control in the behavior of a group of people”. Students’ misbehavior is a dominant problem affecting schools in South Sudan and across many nations in the world that interferes with teaching and learning in school that have intense negative effect on teachers, parents and school administrators. Schools are seen as provider of education and is an important process that each individual has to undergo in life today and in the society indiscipline behaviors had become prominent in the field of education, counseling, sociology, psychology, law, social welfare, politics and indeed any field that have much to do with human behavior have in one way or other affected every aspect of man in his social environment.
School and student indiscipline is a burning problem and issue of great concern for teachers and policy makers due to aggression and indiscipline among students. School indiscipline has been over time an issue of concern for educators. It has become a huge concern to all the educators, policy makers and the community in general. Then owing to the outcome of aggressiveness of some peers, there is a lot of violence within teacher–student relationship and as well as vandalism of school properties. It is behavioral disorder like stealing, abusive language, and dishonesty, lying, which can cause physical damage to school. It barely to be mentioned that habitual problem among students comprise of a major concern in the field of education in African schools which is deeply rooted in South Sudan secondary schools as evident with rampant strikes and boycott classes in the schools.
So the worst indicator of indiscipline then was in 2017 when students entered the school premises with the weapons and others attacking the head teacher and the staff at St. Augustine Secondary School where the head teacher defended himself by firing gun in the air to scare the students. Indiscipline cases are ranked as a major problem among students of secondary schools in South Sudan, Some news was stressed in mass media has exposed the schools with schools of misbehavior characters. Furthermore, according to school head teachers that, some students were suspended and dismissed every day and the serious ruptures of school discipline policy include assault by students on teachers and other students, verbal abuse, unruly behaviors, violation of school rules and regulations, offensive language against teachers and students.
Consequently, the suspension and dismissal and failure of many homes to provide basic and essential moral training in the upbringing of the child have psychological effects on the students. According to Erickson (1996), Back et al (1977) and also hold this opinion in their statement. The term “indiscipline” refers to conduct which the people of a group consider so dangerous or embarrassing that they bring sanctions to bear against the person. The influence of media and failure in communication between young men and women, high level of generation gap in idea in life and society has contributed to the behavior. Cultural values as mediator between parenting styles and bulling behavior at school, and the learning environment play a great role in students” behavior in school. Every child is born genetically equal, but a person`s whole being is shaped by how and what circumstances that surrounds the raising and nurturing of the child in term of behavioral capacity. Carter and Mc Goldrick (2005) state, as children grow older the importance of parent’s decreases as a reference group and as a model for conformity and they begin to relate more with their age mates.
So means that the power of peer group becomes more important when family relationship is not close or supportive. Psychologically, personality traits make some behaviors more likely and others less likely. (Feist, 1998), conscientiousness is characterized by being cautious, careful, fastidious and self-controlled Kenya has faced cases of indiscipline as documented by Mbiti (2007) some of the discipline problem experienced by Kenya secondary schools include truancy, bullying, destruction of school property, physical violence by students on teachers and other students, alcoholism, abuse of drug and substance and others. In this case, there is need to monitoring and supervision of students’ daily activities in the school by administrators and teachers.
The learner’s habitual value of education and the cases of indiscipline should be handled in schools and due to the number of factors such as, bullying, drug abuse, riot, examination mal-practices, sewing gum, shouting unnecessary, possessing offensive weapons, and leaving school without permission. As well as do not bring books to school, rejecting any king of authority and resistant in disciplinary taken against them and intervention into school with intention of confronting teachers and become a case of study and many others cases.
Indiscipline should not be tolerated in schools in order to promote good quality of education and social and economic development in Torit-county in Imotong state because if it is entertained education will become valueless. Therefore, youths are the bright future leaders, it is necessary for the nation to pay attention to the frequently indiscipline among them.
